Sink or Swim

It's a fine line between beachwear and real fashion, but the two categories are far from mutually exclusive. That's not to say that you should rock a bikini top to your next summer cocktail function (unless, of course, that happens to be a beach party) but you can adapt many swimwear pieces and cover-ups for use away from the pool, making these must-haves for any succinct summer wardrobe.

One-piece swimsuits are no longer considered just for fuddy-duddy aunties, and neatly double as bodysuits -- switch out your sarong for a flirty A-line or even a high-waisted pencil skirt. For this exercise we love the screen-printed scenes on We Are Handsome suits -- the ruffled top is modest with a strappy back and a dreamy print, while the cosmic-fab horse scene could easily be evening-appropriate with a solid skirt (sadly, you'll probably have to obscure a bit of My Little Pony). The flattering one-shoulder ruching on the white Clube Bossa is made to do double duty -- paired with that black maxi you could even attend a formal function.

When it comes to cover-ups, there's one element that differentiates a kaftan from a proper dress, and that's called a belt. A proper nice belt lends shape and instantly dresses up any overly floaty look. For example, the long-sleeved Pucci number seems destined for the beach, whereas the sleeveless Missoni, with a similar print and flowiness, seems like it could even take you to the office.
