Graphic Gifts

I posted about Graphic Image's python iPad and laptop cases before, but it seemed apt, with the whole let's-use-our-laptop-cases-as-clutches! movement, to revisit the site. In addition to crocodile-embossed or regular leather laptop cases that fall neatly into that category, there were a whole host of other great gift ideas, namely: crocodile-embossed dictionaries and thesauruses for the stylish nerd, crocodile-embossed coasters for the sophisticated man to rest his whisky glass, and bright monogrammed business-card holders for the birdbrain to store her business cards (by "her", I mean me, who keeps namecards in every nook and cranny in every bag and jacket pocket except, usually, the one I'm currently holding). The colours are so juicy, too, sort of reminiscent of the PP4E x Vicious Venom Deinos Saurus collection.

Geek Peek: Charlotte Ronson

While her siblings have gone the musical route, Charlotte Ronson forged a path in fashion and her designs are often seen on celebrities such as Blake Lively, Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Richie, Joy Bryant, Kate Moss, and Beyonce. Linsay Lohen was also touted on the list that was sent over by the PRs but no clarification on whether this is still true post break-up from Charlotte’s twin sister, Samantha. We ask her six short questions on favourite things about Hong Kong (not counting the eponymous shop at Harbour City that was opened about half a year ago), worst nightmare and secret ambition.

HKFG: What’s on your lust list?
CR: A George Condo painting—I recently saw his exhibition, Mental States, at the New Museum in New York. I think his work is amazing.

HKFG: What fashion item can’t you live without?
CR: My Charlotte Ronson leather jacket from the Spring 2011 season. The more beat up it gets, the better it is.

HKFG: What is your favorite thing about HK?
CR: I personally love Hong Kong because it is such a welcoming place. The people have great style, and are extremely hospitable. I immediately understood why there is such a large expat community. They keep tradition alive but still have an international feeling. The city has great energy.

HKFG: What is your secret ambition?
CR: I love working with children, and if I wasn't designing, I would likely be teaching art to kids.

HKFG: What is your secret-weapon beauty product?
CR: My makeup must haves are Cle de Peau under eye concealer, Armani mascara, and Nars bronzing stick in Malaysia —for when I want a subtle glow. I like YSL, MAC, Josie Maran, Nars lipsticks and glosses, depending on my look.

HKFG: What is your worst nightmare?
CR: My greatest fear is not doing all the fun things I want to in life. The saddest thing is to live with regret because you are held back by fear.

Bag Lady: Mulberry Clipper twill fold-up bag

ShoeGeek and I will be heading to Bangkok this weekend and I was pondering which suitcase to use and how if I use a small carry on suitcase, what if I buy lots and lots in Bangkok and end up needing more space? If only I have this awesomely bright
fold-up bag as a backup. Why didn't I come across it earlier?

Woman Warrior

I was looking through our archives and I can't believe we've never blogged about Norwegian Wood, the Etsy seller who provides quirky blogger girls like Susie Bubble with such randomly awesome accessories as cage-skirts and bow-tie necklaces. The designer/shop owner also makes awesome suspender-inspired harnesses for layering and instant edge. But lately, I'm looking more at the jewellery, which is wonderful in its uniqueness and haphazard approach to inspiration and aesthetic. So you might find a very Aztec-looking warrior woman necklace... or a sort of 8-bit video-game-inspired choker that looks like it might be what Miss Pac-Man puts on for a night on the town (if only she had a neck!)... or neon tassel earrings brighter than an acid trip, so long and fluid they might just be the snot of the gods (does that sound gross? The snot of the gods is still blessed, I think.) If you're intrigued, then check out the rest of the compelling and diverse collection below.

Through the Lens

If you’re a fan of coffee table books, be sure to head over to Stella McCartney at the Landmark as the brand is launching the “Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs” Photo Book today. The images from the book takes you back to the rock and roll era with images of Rolling Stone’s Brian Jones and Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and of course iconic images of the Beatles. Selected from an archive of over 200,000 images, the book also features snapshots of the McCartney family. No word though on whether images of Yoko are included.

16 copies will be available at the shop in three editions:
- Art Edition, two limited editions, retail at HK$38,000
- Collector’s Edition, four limited editions numbered and signed by Sir Paul McCartney, retail at HK$15,000
- Trade Edition, ten limited editions, retail at HK$580

If you can’t get your hands on the books in time, fear not as other bookstores such as Page One will also launch the collector’s edition and trade edition in mid June.

Comfort Food with a View

Food and travel guest blogger hkLifestyleGeek gives us her next scoop on fantastic restaurants around town and travel tips. Contact her at hklifestylegeek@hkfashiongeek.com

SEVVA has a lot going for it, from the amazing view on the top floor of Prince's Building to the stylish decor and comfort-food dishes. The after-work crowd was there in full force when I went there on a recent visit, soaking in the last of the sun's rays before they disappeared into the haze and imbibing a number of drinks from wines to cocktails.

It's the perfect place to sit back and enjoy drinks, with SEVVA's creative cocktail list that includes Honeydew Royale, Ginger & Cherry Mojito, Pink Sangria, Yakultini and chocolate martinis, both dark and white to choose from.

The food concept at SEVVA is to offer classic dishes with a twist, and they range from Shanghainese wontons to char-grilled striploin, Dover sole and Taiwanese beef noodle. And then there are some indulgent ones like macaroni and triple cheese bake with truffles or wagyu beef cheek and ox tongue pot pie with porcini fries.

What's good are the dosas (HK$240), giant, oversized, thin and crisy South Indian pancakes with the choice of four fillings. To me it's more about the dosa than the fillings, though the one with chicken tikka was juicy and flavourful.

Another starter is the baked crabmeat in shell (HK$280) which is filled with fresh crabmeat and finely chopped chives that's very good.

The claypot rice (HK$280) is a delicious dish, not exactly in a traditional claypot but in a ceramic bowl filled with rice, fresh water shrimps and baby peas in a stock of chicken and abalone. This was definitely comfort food that was fresh and homey.

Shanghainese wontons (HK$190) are also good too. The one called The Puritan is vegetarian, featuring over eight vegetables finely diced and wrapped in thin skins and placed in a clear chicken broth.

For seafood, a light dish is the coral garoupa, seafood, tofu quenelles with rice vermicelli (HK$280) that comes in a fish broth, hsin chuk vermicelli and pickles. The seafood is cooked perfectly and tastes really fresh, the vermicelli angel-hair thin.

After all that food, you have to still make room for dessert. The original crunch cake is delectably light and fluffy, with a play on textures of crunchy from the meringue and smooth from the sinful cream.

What's great about the desserts here is that they aren't too sweet, a nice surprise. So that's why you can dig into the chocolate fudge cake with marmalade without feeling too guilty, or another called divine which is chocolate truffle with chocolate sponge cake with raspberries and blackberries, or how about fatal attraction, which has layers of espresso jelly and coffee pannacotta.

Swimsuit Edition

Okay listen up kids and listen good. This season's swim is going to be about bohemian bondage. They said so over at Tavik and I've gotta tell you, I'm buying. What's cool about these photos is that they're styled so differently (hippie meth princess at 80s Purple or cheerleader-turned pageant queen at Revolve Clothing) but both ways, you still want to buy the bikini. In a strange way, it gives hope that buying swimwear online isn't such a lost cause. Like, even though you aren't that cookie-cutter gal in the magazine, you still might look okay. I feel like I went kinda Tyra on you guys there. But she's going to be the new Oprah, I'm telling you. Back to the swimwear -- love the strappy-happy thing on the second one and the crop-top-cum-bikini-top thing going on with the top one. And the general trippy punk colours. You know the drill, pics after the cut.

Going in Circles

I was just introduced to the beautiful jewellery of Beirut-born Joanna Dahdah, who was recently named ‘Best Newcomer’ at this year’s London Jewellery Week and instantly fell in love with her pieces. There’s something very compelling about using one geometric shape to transform it into different designs and there was instant lust when I saw her yellow gold plated gladiator cuff. And while I know this is nothing groundbreaking in terms of design, the craftsmanship of the pieces is evident even by looking at the images. So my interest was piqued when I heard that Joanna is expanding to the Asian market and her first stop is Hong Kong. Her pieces are now exclusively available at bridal boutique Wiwiwed in Causeway Bay so pop on over if you want to check it out.
