To Die For

Maybe it comes from my publishing/advertising background but I love die-cut items. There’s something inherently sexy about recurring geometric shapes. And yes, I know the geek in me is showing its face. So who are the brains behind these lovely scarves? Surprisingly it’s not an up and coming designer but rather an architect firm called Fung + Blatt Architects. They don’t have aspirations to take over the fashion world and in fact, these products are rather innocuously placed onto their online store next to their portfolio of projects completed in the areas of residential, commercial, and community-based design. Their scarves utilise every aspect of the cloth. Too often, the negatives of the die-cut are thrown away but here they are remade into another design. Check out more of their items below.

Model Citizen

Freja Beha Erichsen. I love her best in black and white androgyny, in prettified soft focus, in grungy punk, in basically everything. The opening image is by Mario Sorrenti I believe, I saved it ages ago and I can't remember where it's from, but it's been my laptop wallpaper for ages, I alternate between this and a super sick shot of Stam that's all black lines and white space, very genius, Clockwork Orange-ish. I'll post that one next time. Serious imagery after the cut.

Images: Fashionising, ID magazine and sorry I can't remember the rest. Oops.

U so Fit? Iso Fit

Here's something fun from Iso Fit, the fitness studio in LKF that offer pilates or gyrotonic classes. Stressing that sitting at your desk all day can be harmful to your health as we often develop bad postures leading to back pains, the fitness studio sent out five examples of core strengthening exercises which are easy to do in the office.

1. The “Waitress”
Exercise: Sitting directly on top of your “sitting bones”. Position your arms at right angles with your elbows at the side of your waist and palms facing upwards. Gently move your hands to the side opening up the chest. Try this with a small hand towel or scarf for extra challenge to the external rotators of the shoulder.
Benefit: Strengthens supportive back muscles essential for good posture and opens up the chest.

2. Calf stretch for hellish heels
Exercise: Slip your shoes off and stand on the edge of a step. Release the heel downwards off the step while the toes remain on the edge of the step.
Benefit: Stretches calves and relieves tension. If calf tension is released then muscles along the kinetic chain are also released which could positively impact LB (low back) pain.

3. The chest stretch
Exercise: Place one hand on a wall, no higher than your shoulder. Draw your abdominals up and gently turn your body away from your arm.
Benefit: Open and stretches front muscles, undoes the slouch and tightness and significantly improves overhead reaching.

4. The cross over
Exercise: Sit on your chair a little away from your desk. Remember to sit up on your “sitting bones” (this requires extra deep abdominal support). Cross one leg over the other at a bent angle (make sure you are not wearing a skirt for this one, ladies!). Place your hands on your desk. Position your “sitting bones” behind you, lift up your tummy and move your spine forward over your desk. Feel the stretch in the back of your thighs and glutes (the muscles in your posterior).
Benefits: Releases tightness and tension through the lower back by releasing tension in the glutes which are often the culprit with regard to LB Pain

5. Rotation
Exercise: Sit on your “sitting bones”. Cross your arms and hold your elbows. Sit as tall as you can and breathe in. Exhale, draw your abdominals in and twist to one side. Exhale and return to your starting position.
Benefits: Engages and balances the use of oblique abdominal and rotator muscles which are vital "slings" of the body that we often tend to under use when walking due to the bags we carry. This in turn leads to the overworking of outer muscle groups to support mobility.

They're Boxy But They're Good

We're so obsessed with the 2-in-1s these days, it's no surprise that jewellery feels compelled to become something more -- like a purse, or at the very least, a pouch. Bally kicked off the idea with its little brass box on a chain, but there are more variations as well, after the cut. At first I was thinking, I can barely fit my stuff in a clutch sometimes, but then I realized that this IS kind of genius for those nights you just want to stick your ID and credit cards in your pocket with some cash, go out and get stinking drunk without fear that you've left your clutch somewhere you can't remember (you know, like wedged up under your sweaty armpit...). The only reason I didn't realize that at first was because I don't have those nights. Ah, youth.

Ten points for anyone who gets the reference in the header.

Bunny Hop

With Halloween coming up, I wonder how many fashion vixens are going to use the excuse to rock bunny ears in a costume? They've always been popular as an accessory to a Playboy bunny costume (and isn't Halloween an excuse to slut it out anyway), but with Louis Vuitton and Maison Michel ears making the rounds, it's almost too good to resist.

But McQueen took the bunny ear theme and hopped on over to the next logical part of this evolution -- bunny ears shaped from nature's own material, your good old mane of hair. Although arguably, those twin peaks resemble more than just ears... but do excuse me, I read a lot of Freud in college. *retrieves mind from depths of gutter*

Subtly Halloween

For some reason, Honkers love their Halloweens. It’s one of those odd events where the whole town goes all out. In fact, some might say that Halloween is a bigger deal than Christmas. So if you head on out to LKF this Saturday, be ready to see some great costumes. And if you do see anything spectacular, take a picture and send it back to us. We’d love to do a post-Halloween roundup!

Some of us, however, aren’t too great at dressing up yet still want to get into the spirit of things and this post is for you. Below, find some items that will get you into the festive mood without going too over the top.

Chanel Nuit de Russie Nail Polish
This is one of my favourite nail colours. Applies on very smoothly (but a bit prone to chipping so be sure to put on a top coat.) Looks black until that moment when it catches the light and a bit of blue-green shines through. At Chanel.

Bellini Spider & Net Pendant
I absolutely cannot stand spiders in real life but for some reason love spider or web jewellery. At YesStyle.

Topshop Cobweb Net Tights
Oh so hot. I’d wear this on a normal day just to give me that gothic edge. At Topshop.

Inside Out

My pup and I took a field trip to Ap Lei Chau yesterday and while she had a frolic with the other kids at the dog playground at Whiskers & Paws, I took a quick spin through the outlets... you know, just for a gander. Before you could say "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", I was laying down the plastic for a VPL bra at the Lane Crawford outlet. (I wisely steered clear of the shoe racks this time.) And what can I say? It's genius. Lingerie is so very pretty, it shouldn't stay under wraps. I pulled it on in the changing room over what I was wearing -- a grey t-shirt dress from the pajama section at H&M -- and all of a sudden, I was the hotness like Ap Lei Chau has never seen. I'll post pics of it later on but in the meantime, check out these other options from shopbop, la garconne and creatures of comfort. The la garconne one, unfortunately, is sold out. But I think mine is better than all of these, it's grey chiffon with a raceback and oh-so-delish.

SHOErotica: Christian Louboutin Brigette Ankle Boots

I took my Loubies out for a rare spin the other day and forgot how goddamn comfortable they are. Not to mention how they make you feel -- like a fiery goddess, unstoppable. But these sheer little ankle booties are the best thing to wear in this summer-to-fall transition period, one foot in each season.

Search Party: Why Do...

Another edition of our favourite Google vs Google Hong Kong auto-complete search strings. In the battle of the "why oh whys", it seems that while Hong Kongers are predominantly interested in the rationales of romance, curious minds in the rest of the world are looking for the long-lost answer to the age-old zen koan... Why do men have nipples? Ponder that one.
