So harem pants are back for the warm weather. They made a grand entrance during the Spring/Summer 09 collections from funky pants at Vivienne Westwood to sequined ones at Ralph Lauren. Other designers coming out with the dreaded harem pants include Emmanuel Ungaro, Derek Lam, Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors and many more. Why are they dreaded? Well besides the inevitable comparison to MC Hammer, I’ve always found these loose fitting pants extremely hard to carry off. They really are only suitable for skinny girls without thunder thighs which unfortunately FashionGeek possesses a pair of. They look so comfy but at the end of the day the loose drapery only enhances my already large behind. I am particularly taken with this harem jumpsuit by Malene Birger. (Ah if only I didn’t possess the elephant leg gene)
For those adventurous to take on the harem pants, I suggest pairing them with structured pieces or with a blazer. Be sure to wear heels to counteract the top-heavy shape of the pants but not skinny heels as they will contrast a bit too much with the volume of fabric. And of course, veer away from anything too baggy as a top. You don’t want to look like a circus tent has fallen on you.
