When you've been working for a luxury title in Hong Kong for too long, you tend to be wary of jewellery brands, they of the big advertising budgets, bossy PRs who act like they own you and really not-very-interesting slash not-very-nice-looking products. It was a pleasant surprise to show up at the apm Monaco event to support Candice and find out that not only was some of the stuff pretty cute, but that I could afford it. Priced at between $500 and the low tens of thousands, the jewellery is delicate enough for everyday, but not so basic that it isn't at all interesting. As the name suggests, apm Monaco takes its inspiration from that spot on the French riviera: in other words, slightly pretentious but ultimately carefree, beachy, effortless French chic.
Not all of the items are to my taste, but I was SUPER DUPER excited when I got home later that night (amazingly, I refrained from attacking it in the taxi like I usually do...) to find in the goodie bag... the lips necklace! It's from the Valentine collection, which is one of my preferred ones, along with the Sauvage (Georg Jensen-ish shapes with a bit more edge), Rock Chic (goofy skulls embellished with extras), Colors (simple brights) and Mariage (sleek, almost severe but uncomplicated pieces). The Mariage skinny skinny rings are awesomely stackable, although at $3,000+ a pop and barely 1mm in thickness, it'll cost a pretty few grand to get a good finger totem-pole going.
The new apm Monaco boutique is a 1/F, 8-10 Duddell Street in Central, though only open Mon-Sat 10-7pm.
