A Geek's 10 Beauty Must-Haves

beauty

We do a lot of product posts on cool new launches, recent beauty finds and occasionally the "what's in my make-up bag" thing, but I don't believe we've ever done a top products list.

I'm rarely a repeat customer at beauty counters because I get a fair amount of stuff from events to test-drive, so the stuff's got to be really good for me to forgo a freebie and pay for something (yeah, yeah, #firstworldproblems, I know).

Some of the stuff I've been sweet on lately, for face: Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge Daily Renew Cleanser (great for gentle cleansing and exfoliation, reviewed here), Omorovicza's Gold Flash Firming Serum (because there's REAL GOLD in it) and The Organic Pharmacy Rose Plus Brightening Complex (which really brightens and lightens scars).

Mask-wise, I feel overnighters are the way to go when it comes to hydration. Aromatherapy Associates' Overnight Repair Mask is a favourite among everyone I know, and is easier on the budget. But if you have, say, three grand spare to drop on a mask, then Guerlain's Orchidee Imperiale Mask is the cream of the crop. It's not necessarily designed to be left on overnight because it mucks up your pillow, too, but hey, if you can afford the price tag for the mask you can also afford to wash your pillowcase every now and then.

Otherwise, for makeup, alllll the pros recommend Laura Mercier's primer. It really gives you a crazy base for your foundation (I've been using Benefit's Oxygen Wow). YSL's Rouge Pur Couture lip gloss in #9 is the best non-translucent-but-still-juicy true red lip colour I've found, even if you have to pile on three coats without blotting just to make it look like anything. Liner is always MAC's Fluidline, applied with brush #266. And for fun, I've been using Chenman for MAC's Love & Water Supersweet to blend with the regular black-grey smokey eye; the pink/gold/violet isn't as daunting as it may seem in the tub.
