Review: Punch Detox

I love food. I love indulging in food and I am also horrible at drinking enough fluids during the day. I swear my body must be severely dehydrated most of the time given that I can easily pour a cup of coffee in the morning and it'll only be half finished by the time it's 6pm. As such, I have always been intrigued by the premise of doing a juice detox. Punch, one of the earliest juicing companies to step foot into HK had offered me a cleanse ages ago but I never took them up on the offer as I was convinced that I would be crabby and turn into a massive bitch which isn't exactly the sort of behaviour that would be acceptable in a client servicing industry. Then I read Choptixfix's post on what she called "The Sh*tscapades" and it just terrified me even more. Nonetheless, since I'm on sabbatical and back from the epic Europe trip, I decided to clear out my calendar for three days and give it a shot. It also helped that my friend decided to do it with me so that we have a buddy system in place.

First things first, unlike the other juice companies, Punch delivers all 18 bottles to you the night before your cleanse starts so make sure you clear our space in your fridge. Prior to starting the cleanse, Punch sends you useful emails telling you what to do pre-detox and helpful tips. When I started on the cleanse, I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty each juice was. I started with the Citrus Punch which comprised lemon, ginger cayenne pepper, agave nectar and filtered water. (Each bottle was conveniently labelled and all you do is drink in order.)

This was the one I was apprehensive about since I am not a fan of celery or bitter melon but it was not as bad as I thought. Think it’s due to copious amounts of cucumber and apple making it rather refreshing.

Red punch was yummy AND matched my nails. To be fair tho, I was getting hangry and rushed home to have this so maybe that also made it even tastier

Fruit punch was just as described except I kept wanting to pour booze into the bottle for the perfect fruity cocktail. It would kinda defeat the purpose of this juice cleanse huh?

Best juice was the Gazpuncho. By this stage, I’ve pinpointed what I’m missing, savory flavors. This juice really hit the spot especially since it wasn’t pure liquid and had a bit of a munch to it. I duly poured it into a bowl as recommended and I guess that also helped with the mindset?

The 6th Nut Punch was a yummy dessert to end the day. Tasted just like almond soup. Good thing I love almonds!

So after three days of drinking juice, what was my state of mind? Well it definitely started getting challenging towards the end but it was more that I was getting bored of tasting the same juices on a daily basis. Once I had figured out that the lack of savory tastes were making it difficult to go through the day, I consulted my cheat sheet and saw that miso soup was on the approved list so started throwing in a miso soup every two juices or so. Did I end up feeling miraculously better, clear headed, lost a ton of weight etc? No, nor did I expect it to. As Punch advised, this was a good way to restart my system and try to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

What I did find (and this is even a couple weeks after the cleanse) was that my desire for fluids have enhanced greatly and I am finally drinking more fluids which is awesome given that I keep forgetting to drink water. One thing to note, the day after the cleanse, my palate reset and every taste was super heightened which was confusing to say the least. I was cooking and didn't season to taste but rather just threw in the usual amounts of spices and the dish came out unbelievable salty (my friend thought it was just fine so it was definitely my palate that was off). This actually made it easier to stay on a healthier lifestyle for the following days given that I found restaurant food way too much for my palate.

Review: Hof & Soju

My friends and I were craving Korean Fried Chicken the other day and decided to check out Hof & Soju given that they had opened a Causeway Bay a few months ago. We ventured over on a Monday night at 7pm and it was virtually empty making me a tad worried about the food. We decided to give it a go anyway as the TST branch consistently has long lines. The good thing was, the chicken didn't disappoint. We ordered a mix platter of original flavour and sweet & spicy along with an order of soondae (a stuffed sausage that was made out of pig's intestines.) Be forewarned that the platter of chicken was quite large and between three of us, we weren't able to finish the two dishes. The restaurant also has a 1.5 hour time limit (which didn't make sense at first but we soon saw the restaurant fill up quite quickly.) The soondae was a bit too mushy for my taste, so we probably wouldn't revisit for that but we did say we wouldn't mind going back to try the other flavours. One dish I was intrigued by was the silkworm soup, however my companions were a bit squeamish and forbade me from ordering it. Perhaps next time! Dinner for the three of us came to HK$420 where we ordered a small bottle of soju, the mix platter and soondae.

DIY: Candy Shot Glasses

A couple years ago, I bought a silicon mold from Fred where you can basically make your own ice shot glasses. After trying it once, I decided that it is a fun concept but not that awesome in reality. What you ended up was a glass that you can't hold on for a long period of time (unless you want frozen fingers) and a glass that would just drip everywhere. Since then I've been trying to think of ways to use it and recently decided to try to make candy shot glasses which turned out to be amazingly easy. Click on for instructions.

What you will need:
One pack of hard candy (I used the Fox candies and a 90g pack yielded exactly one glass)

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 180C.

2. Unwrap the candy and slot them into the mold one by one. Keep it tight and don't worry if it bulges a bit. Fill the mold up to the very top like the photo above.

3. Place the mold in the oven and bake for approximately 12 minutes or until everything has melted.
4. Take the mold out and use a spoon to tap out any large air bubbles.

5. Let cool and then push the shot glasses out from the bottom of the silicone mold, and twist the glass so the middle releases.

6. Fill with your liquor of choice keeping in mind that the liquor will absorb some of the candy flavour.

Big Bang Theory Lego

I've made no secret of the fact that I'm a big fan of Big Bang Theory. I also LOVE Lego minifigs so it was like Christmas came early when I heard that Lego has approved the proposal to create a BBT version of Lego. Unfortunately, there are not details on when the set would actually come out, likely sometime next year. Stay tuned for more details!

Absolut Andy Warhol

I'm not too sure how I feel about this year's special edition from Absolut vodka, in the previous years, I've loved the campaigns from Absolut Unique to Absolut Originality but this year's Absolut Andy Warhol Limited Edition feels more like a rehash which I guess is technically the case as they have transformed Warhol's painting into a 3D form. Needless to say, as someone who's been fascinated with the brand for almost two decades (brilliant marketing campaign, meh tasting product) I will still likely cave in and get me a bottle. Absolut Andy Warhol is limited to 2,000 bottles in Hong Kong, available at Park n Shop, Market Place, Rare & Fine Wines and voi.la! from 7 November, at a recommended price of HK$189.

Turkey a la Blue Butcher

hkLifestyleGeek gives us the easy way to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas at home

Want to do turkey with a bunch of friends for American Thanksgiving and/or Christmas but don't have an oven? Blue Butcher may have the answer for you.

The restaurant in Sheung Wan offers a great deal for a party of eight -- turkey and dessert for HK$1,680. So if you order drinks and appetisers, like duck and ham hock terrine, jarred foie gras and chicken liver, and organic smoked beetroot, then you're good to go.

The turkey arrives at the table already carved so all you have to do is open your mouth and chew. The meat is succulent and tasty, and is accompanied with some mashed potato and stuffing.

Be sure to save room for dessert -- it's chef Danny Chaney's mother's recipe for pumpkin pie. It's so good you have to prevent yourself from inhaling it to savour the dessert that isn't too sweet and is accompanied with cinnamon-spiked cream.

Emilio Pucci "Cities of the World" Collection

I love Pucci's colourful prints and when I saw that they are doing a special collection of scarves for cities where they have a presence, (Florence, Rome, New York, Paris, Shanghai and Hong Kong) I was wondering how they would do Hong Kong as my first impression would be Hong Kong's skyline and just lots of blue. While my assumption wasn't too far off, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were vibrant hues of pink and sharp neon yellows in the scarf. Besides highlighting our skyline, the other cities showcases "Rome's historic Spanish steps, Paris' famed Avenue Montaigne, New York's Madison Avenue and Central Park and Shanghai's cosmopolitan skyline." Expect to see the scarves in store starting November 15th.

IWC Big Pilot's Watch Edition «Le Petit Prince»

I love Le Petit Prince and sometimes dismay at the commercialisation of his image. He's been used pretty much everywhere and I fear that he will eventually become what the next Hello Kitty and people won't really know how amazing a story the book was and how it resonates with people. Yet I must admit that the IWC collaboration is very tastefully done and something that would make a lovely sentimental gift for someone to treasure.

Geek Peek: Coco Rocha

It's been super hard getting over post vacation blues so apologies for the radio silence (I have been posting more regularly on instagram though so if you did miss me, feel free to head on over. While I've been away, lots have been going on in Hong Kong like Mary Kay's Dream Beautiful Contest. It was a pity I couldn't have joined as it looked to be an amazing night full of beautiful makeup looks and super fun activities in addition to the show. One of our favourite models, Coco Rocha was the guest judge and we couldn't resist doing a Geek Peek with her. Read on to see what fashion item she can't live without, what cuisine she could eat every day and not be sick of and her secret ambition.

HKFG: What’s on your lust list?
CR: 1) The new Apple watch. We have to wait until spring of 2015! I'm going to be a mom soon so I'm obsessed with tech baby products. 2) The origami stroller looks amazing. 3) My new book 'Study Of Pose'! It's a beautiful book, as an object and has been a real labor of love these last two years.

HKFG: What fashion item can’t you live without?
CR: For the fall I'm so excited to wear a cape!

HKFG: What’s the thing you could live without... but still can’t bear to part with?
CR: I still have my childhood teddy bear at home. His name is "Baby Bear" and he is looking worse for wear but I could never throw him out!

HKFG: What’s your favourite thing about Hong Kong?
CR: I love the views here! It's a beautiful city. In Manhattan you never really get to appreciate the sky scrapers and architecture because you're in the middle of it all the time, what I love about Hong Kong is that there are so many beautiful views of the city from all angles.

HKFG: Tell us your secret ambition.
CR: I'd love to be able to sing. I can carry a tune but I'm not great at it. One day I'd love to take some voice lessons.

HKFG: What’s the song that you sing in the shower?
CR: Probably something from Les Miserables.

HKFG: Your ultimate indulgence food or go-to food when you’re stressing out?
CR: I love Korean BBQ. I could have that every day, forever and never get tired of it.

HKFG: The celebrity you would most like to be/trade places with is...
CR: Probably Elizabeth Taylor, she was the epitome of glamour.

HKFG: What was your first big investment purchase?
CR: I bought my first apartment in New York around 8 years ago, it was at the height of the market, right before the crash in the economy, so it probably wasn't the best investment!

HKFG: Name your secret-weapon beauty product.
CR: I love Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream. Especially with the amount of travel I do, my skin can get very dehydrated. Using this every night is a must!

HKFG: What’s your worst nightmare?
CR: I sometimes have a nightmare where I lose my teeth and it's horrible!

HKFG: Last thing you think about before going to sleep?
CR: Probably the little baby that's growing inside me! I can't wait to find out if it's a boy or a girl!

HKFG: What’s your favourite iPhone app?
CR: I love my social media, I'd say my instagtam and sina weibo.

HKFG: What were your last five Google searches?
CR: "Hong Kong dollars to US dollar conversion calculator"; "Study Of Pose Amazon.com"; "Phillips Hue lights"; "Liza Minelli and Judy Garland duet video" and "chimney sweeps Westchester NY"
