CFDA: People Wearing Things

You know the drill. The CFDA had its evening of accolades and sponsorship, designers showed up with fashion ambassadresses in tow kitted out in cocktail-wear by their dates. The world cared a little about who won what, a tad more about who showed up with whom and a lot about who wore whom. And in HKFG tradition, we talk about it, not so much in a "best or worst dressed?" kind of way, but in a general "oh, interesting, this is what I have to say" manner. And what I have to say is this:

Mary Kate and Ashley owned it in The Row, plus a Chanel jacket and LV shoes for MK and Manolos for Ashley. And sick Cartier bling and awesome awesome The Row bags. When are these arriving in my closet? And although I said this isn't a best-dressed list, they are my best dressed. I was just reading about them somewhere (maybe the Business of Fashion?) saying how they plan to exit the whole acting thing to concentrate on building a fashion empire, and they freely reference their teenage reign as the Queens of Walmart. I love it when people embrace their weird pasts. Not that Walmart is weird -- quite the opposite, I guess, it's as mainstream as it gets, which is weird in and of itself. Anyway, continuing on.

So Miranda Kerr looks great in Michael Kors, even though that dress is totally ripping off Karolina Kurkova in Pucci at the De Grisogono gig in Cannes. And Michael Kors looks the same as always, which is boring and orange. And Ashley Greene looks great, even though that dress is Michael Kors totally coming back to his greatest-hits neon pink after Blake Lively did it and looked so so hot and Brookyln Decker did it at the Met Ball and looked pretty damn good. It's always a showstopper but maybe... try another colour, I know you can do it.

I don't think I've ever seen Liv Tyler in Proenza Schouler and you wouldn't think her giantess frame would look good in all that tribal print, but she does.

Chloe Sevigny has gotten to the point where she can do no wrong; she is fashion goddessry. And I think the pressure is getting to her a bit. After all she's one of a very few following in the footsteps of the Olsen twins, parlaying good acting into good fashion -- credible fashion. But the problem is that maybe only Chloe looks good in really Chloe-ish outfits, like this one she did for her Opening Ceremony line. You look at it and go "oh-em-gee she is so cool, but I could never pull that off." And while that's great for an actress, that's not very good for a label.

Not entirely sure who Jenna Lyons is but she's wearing J.Crew and she looks so Marni-meets-Marc Jacobs that you have to give her kudos.

Leelee Sobieski with Adam Kimmel. I always wondered why Leelee Sobieski got invited to all these gigs covered on Style.com and now that I've googled Adam Kimmel I know it's because she's engaged to him and I guess he's a menswear designer. And that's the main reason I've posted this picture. But also because she looks quite good, and she has for some time now.

This photo of Liya Kebede in Derek Lam with Derek Lam is cool because you get the sense that this is a dress that anyone can pull off, whether it's a dazzling model or... you. It's probably not true, but she looks so effortless that you can almost believe it.

With Anna Wintour looking her usual prim self on the arm of Haider Ackermann, the I-dream-of-draping duty for the night went instead to Anais Mali in Sophie Theallet, with the designer. It's pretty much what Mr Ackermann would dream up, but he'd do it in a jewel tone or a starker white and then slash random pieces of material out. That's the difference between a woman and man designer: pastel colours and the choice to bare arms.

I want to be Leigh Lezark so badly! She's in Helmut Lang with designers Nicole and Michael Colovos.

See, Kirsten Dunst knows labels other than Chanel and Rodarte. Like Patrik Ervell, with whom she is posing. She does the suit justice and he totally does his face justice. What a cutie, in a sort of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers meets young army recruit kind of way.

Sofia Sanchez, in Rodarte, with Alexandre de Betak. Who? I don't know. But that's a very cool frock.
